GEISINGER
MEDICAL CENTER TEAMS UP WITH ISH, INC. FOR
STERILE PROCESSING IMPROVEMENTS |
| FAIRFIELD,
NJ: Geisinger Medical Center & Health
System, headquartered in Danville, PA and ISH, Inc.
unveiled the successful results of a business process
management and education project for the Sterile
Processing Department. ISH was hired by Geisinger
MC to assist in the improvement of service and efficiencies
by SPD to the OR, patient care floors, other internal
customers, and ultimately to the patients themselves.
These improvements included the increase of customer
satisfaction, SPD professional development, SPD
staff education, redesign of instrument process
flow, and the optimization of the instrument asset
management system. Notable improvements include: |

Development and implementation of an OR/SPD
Performance Improvement Dashboard driven by
Performance Improvement monitoring forms filled
out for each surgical case by OR personnel.
This dashboard ranks issues by category (i.e.:
Infection Control, Instrument Assembly) and
displays trending.

A departmental PI plan was also created that
includes daily OR rounds plus weekly SPD/OR
meeting and QA’s. A weekly Project Team
meeting provides CQI for OR/SPD communication.
A quarterly Customer Service Survey and an Issues
& Resolution Log were created to continue
to track improvement.

The ordering process was streamlined; disposable
products organized for improved space utilization;
obsolete instrumentation was removed; active
workstations were increased; and ergonomically
correct workstations were purchased and installed.

An ISH Instrument Recognition Course was successfully
implemented along with daily monitoring of tray
assembly. Additionally, a SPD educator position
was created and filled.

Wireless handhelds were implemented, super-users
trained, and system usage policies and procedures
were developed. The item catalog was cleansed
and uploaded, Instrument Set Lists (ISL) and
ancillary files were evaluated and reformatted,
missing ISL’s were built and all existing
instrument images were validated and corrected
as needed.

ISH provided interim leadership as Manager,
Supervisors and Lead Techs as needed while new
recruits were sought. ISH assisted in the hiring
process and provided mentoring of the new personnel.

ISH also determined optimum staffing levels
and developed a new scheduling matrix for peak
work hours.

Geisinger Medical Center plans to implement
an ISH SPD Certification Course during FY07.
